About Coaching
I once heard coaching described as “getting you to stay true to what you say you want”, and I like that description. I believe that you have all the resources you need to get what you want from life – whether that means in work, financially, in relationships, hobbies or any other personal or professional goals that you have. It seems to be a fact of life that there are times when we are truly amazing, so good that we surprise ourselves, and then at other times we just can’t seem to get it together. Maybe we are really successful in some areas of our lives but not so successful in others. Most of us are like this most of the time.
But what if we could take those experiences, that way of being when we were really on top of our game, and bring that into any area or activity? Can you think of a time when you did something really well, it went off without a hitch and you were thrilled with the outcome? Or a time when you had to do something really difficult - something that was a real stretch - that you weren’t sure you could pull it off, but you did? I bet you can! What if you could be that good no matter what you were doing? If you had the confidence, self-belief and assurance that you have when you do the things you are good at? What about being able to get ‘in the zone’ whenever you wanted to? To be able to clear your mind of the clutter that stops you from doing what you want to do and get on with what’s important, what is going to make a difference to your life.
Coaching helps you to be like this. Coaching helps you to decide what you really want from life, and then how to start and keep moving in that direction. Your coach will help you to focus on what you say is important – what you want – and help you stay motivated towards them. And when ‘bumps in the road’ start to put you off course your coach will help you stay on course, and change the way you respond to ‘setbacks’ so that they don’t become ‘holdbacks’.
What can you expect from Coaching?
There are some ‘givens’ that you can expect from me as your coach:
Confidentiality: I will not disclose anything about you whatsoever to anyone at all unless you explicitly request us to or I have asked you if I can and you agree.
Respect: I respect your right to whatever views, beliefs or opinions you hold to be true for you.
Recognition: I will always try our best to understand your perspective of any situation and acknowledge the validity of your perspective.
Honesty: I will always deal honestly and openly with you.
Professionalism: I will always try to perform at our highest level when working with you and be as effective as I can be.
Support: Coaching is a supporting relationship. I am concerned with you and your objectives for yourself. I commit to always trying to find the best way to offer you more options, never less.
In terms of a coaching process, it goes something like this:
We will agree our working terms: Fees, Time commitment, where we will work, how often and so on.
We start by understanding what you would like to achieve from coaching, and I may make suggestions of our own for you to consider.
First of all we will see if there is anything urgent that must be looked at.
From there we will look at setting goals, and prioritising them. Because you need to be motivated to achieve your goals we will be introducing a structure to goal setting that brings in your values, and any beliefs that you may have about your capacity to achieve your goals. We will see if your goals conflict with your values and beliefs or each other, or if your beliefs and values support motivation to achieve your goals.
I then support you to turn your goals into action plans, and help you to examine how you will achieve what you want. If you have any blocks, I will support you to loosen them.
Coaching is an ongoing relationship based on supporting you to get what you say you want. My aim is to help you to release your own resources to their fullest capability. I believe you have all the resources you need.
